Richard Wayne McGaughey

March 18, 1941 – January 1, 2020

In Remembrance of a Loving Husband, Father, Friend – and Forever a Shepherd

Richard Wayne McGaughey died January 1st , surrounded by family, from a sudden and unexpected bout with pneumonia.  He was born to a mother from a hard-scrapping family in Pasadena, Texas and to a father likely labeled in Tennessee during the Dust Bowl as “GTT” (Gone To Texas). The strength of his family and the spirit born in him gave him the drive to accomplish many dreams in his lifetime – dreams that did not come easily nor were they put in reach for him by others.  Family was very important to Richard and he attributed his family as one of his proudest accomplishments in life.  He was a product of Abilene Christian College, Texas A&M, and the United States Army, where he served  during the Vietnam War leaving the Service as a Lieutenant in the 101st Airborne Rangers (the Special Forces, known at that time as the Green Berets).

Richard met his wife Bernalyn while both were working for Shell Chemical Company.  They were married in 1978.  In 1988, Richard and Bernalyn started a consulting business in Washington State related to the agricultural chemical field and regulatory requirements, becoming one of the first to see how spatial technologies and geographic information systems could be applied to agricultural field solutions and chemical risk assessment.  That consulting business is known as Compliance Services International and is still in business today.

Richard is survived by Bernalyn, his wife of 41 years, daughter Carole, and sons Rob and Brad, 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  Impressionable comments from Richard were that he was just a guy who had worn many hats: soldier, aviator, lawman, sailor, pastor, and more.  He summed up his lifetime goal as, “I just hope to be a blessing to everyone whom God puts in my path.”

For those wishing to honor Richard’s memory, please consider a contribution in his name to Life Choices of Yakima (https://www.lifechoicesyakima.com/) or the Union Gospel Mission of Yakima (https://www.yugm.org/).
